Microsoft Details Product Activation, Anti-Piracy Efforts

During a public presentation on the company’s role in intellectual privacy, Microsoft officials on Wednesday detailed a few more specifics of the product activation feature and said the company was working to bridge the gap between content providers’ intellectual property and consumers’ rights. You’ll be able to reinstall future Microsoft applications or OSes as many times as you want on your PC, but tweak enough hardware changes and you may be reaching for the phone to reactivate the OS.

Start Your Codecs: Microsoft Revs Up New Windows Media

Microsoft accelerated the race to establish the next-generation streaming media standard yesterday with the release of Windows Media Audio and Video 8. The upgrade to the Windows Media format, which runs on current versions of Windows Media Player, promises better quality at lower bandwidths, Microsoft says, and will come as standard equipment on Windows XP.

Microsoft Didn’t Violate Sun’s Copyright

Way back in 1997, Microsoft got involved in a different lawsuit over unfair competition. A preliminary ruling in that case was handed down today, and it looks like Microsoft managed to win one for a change.
