The Persistence of Memory: DRAM to Get Dense and Fast
Elpida Vice President Hidemori Inukai had to take some time to introduce his company even after an introduction from presenters of this week’s Platform Conference in San Jose. A joint venture of Hitachi and NEC, Elpida from its founding in April 2000 has quickly become a memory manufacturing powerhouse, settling outstanding litigation with memory technology company Rambus and ramping up product offerings and fab capacity to compete on next-generation PC platforms.
Double Trouble: Here Comes Quad Band Memory
As the first PCs using double data rate (DDR) SDRAM are hitting the mainstream, a New England company has announced the next generation: Quad Band Memory (QBM). Boston-based Kentron Technologies’ new memory technology doubles the read and write speed of DDR memory, which means a memory speed four times the front side bus speed.
