As’ Somos

As’ Somos (The Way We Are) was founded in 1981 by Lorna Burdsall. US-born Burdsall trained at the Julliard in New York under Alfredo Corvino, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham and Anthony Tudor. She fell in love with a Cuban Bacard’ rum executive in New York and in 1955 moved back with him to Havana. After the Revolution, Burdsall was a founder member of Danza Nacional (now Danza Contemporánea de Cuba; ) and helped introduce new techniques into Cuban modern dance.
Lorna is best described as an artistic magpie, assembling her work out of theatre, music, dance, masks and contemporary folklore. To give you an idea of her eclecticism, she uses flashlights for lighting, shammy leathers for costumes, Soviet army-surplus silk parachutes for backdrops, poetry by Lorca and Mart’, musical sources ranging from Astor Piazzola to Chopin; her young granddaughter is the principal dancer.
